My name is Jesse Wright.

I used to be a junior high school physical education teacher, a
profession that required patience and the ability to psychologically
handle at times unruly pre-teens and teens.

It was challenging to say the least, and if though it was really tough
at times, I loved it.

An odd twist of fate happened to me that caused me to completely change
professions, something I never thought I'd do.

It happened because of a perplexing challenge with a dog that I didn't
even own.

I believe he woke the whole neighborhood up.

First he was whining which became growling and then nonstop barking.

For two hours that felt like an eternity, he kept me awake.

I had to mash two pillows tight to my ears while I desperately tried to
get some sleep.
I thought it would be over in the morning.

I told myself I would go over to my neighbors, the Pennington's, and
complain to them.

I was sure they would be embarrassed about it and find a way to fix the
problem.

They promised me they would.

They said they were going to housebreak him, potty train him, keep him
quiet and do whatever it would take to transform him into an obedient,
well behaved dog.

On my way back over to my house, I ran into a strange dog out on my
lawn, digging two basketball-sized holes.

I chased it away and it ran back over to the Pennington's place. Of
course he was the dog that woke me up the night before.

I shook my head in disbelief.

Fast-forward to a few weeks later and Rocky had done so much damage to
my life I just couldn't take it anymore.

Here's just a short list of his `offenses':

* dug several huge holes in my lawn
* ran up and jumped up on me whenever I left my house
* bit my leg a couple of times when I tried to chase him
away
* used my backyard as his own private outhouse

I was so fed up that when I couldn't take it any more I went over to
the Pennington's and gave them a piece of my mind...

I was so fed up I honestly actually suggested that to them.

Of course, even though they were upset with Rocky's terrible behaviors,
they objected to my crazy suggestion.

They were at their wits end too.

They had run out of ideas.

They'd tried every training program on him spending countless hours
trying to correct him but nothing seemed to work.

They were so desperate, they offered me a challenge...

The $3,000 Challenge

They were obviously sincerely very sorry for what Rocky had done to me.

So they bounced this crazy idea off me to see what I thought about it.
They asked me to try to train their ill behaved mutt.

Me? A school teacher?

They reasoned that since I was a teacher, I should have at least some
idea of how to control rebellious school children.

Weren't lots of children somewhat like misbehaving dogs?

Since I was constantly losing sleep because of Rocky's barking, I was
close to losing my job due to sagging performance already.

I was always tired and dragging at work.

So, it was either:

a) reject the challenge, continue to lose sleep and possibly lose my
job. I was already sure I'd never get another night of peaceful sleep.

OR

b) take the challenge, have a shot at pocketing an extra $3,000,
finally get a peaceful night's sleep and keep my job if I'm successful.

The benefits seemed to heavily outweigh the risks of accepting the
challenge. I had nothing to lose except for a little time in tackling
it.

So, I took them up on their offer. Wouldn't you have if you were me?

I `inherited' all the dog training programs the Pennington's acquired
and started poring through them.

I thought they might have missed an important step or two in the reams
of information.

I was like a mad scientist at work. I jotted down pages and pages of
notes to apply what I thought would work on Rocky.

Through trial and error...implementing a couple of tweaks in the
combined pieces from the programs here and there...I finally got it
down.

I was able to control Rocky and turn him into an obedient dog that
listened to me.
